Vasko Tasev: A1 has given me the opportunity to work for 1.2M users

Vasko Tasev has started his professional career at Vip as an intern at the Department for Information Systems for Business Support, and is now working as Specialist for System Operations for Business Support.

His perseverance and the desire to become part of a multinational company have opened him the doors to Vip, so Vasko usually says that although perseverance is the key to success, it is also important to believe in yourself.

How did you being a student at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering & Information Technologies become a part of Vip’s big family?

As I neared the end of my studies, I started wondering what my next step would be to continue learning and to start my professional path. I had my mind set that I wanted to start my professional career in a corporate environment, or to be specific, in a multinational company, which I hoped would allow me to improve and advance my knowledge. However, there were also times when the fear of not having enough experience gave way to some dilemmas and doubts if I was able to reach the objectives I have set for myself. Fortunately, my story has a happy ending and it is a massive proof that companies in our country open their doors to young people who are ready to learn and work hard.

At Vip I started off as an intern, but one of my coworkers recommended me to apply to the announcement in which the Company sought an intern at the SQAT Testing Department, so I applied and was called in for an interview few days later. Since I was student at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering & Information Technologies, at the Department of Telecommunications and Information Engineering, I was offered an internship at the BSS Operations team. Of course, I accepted the offered position without thinking for a second, because it was a huge challenge for me personally, but also form my experience and education. The entire process was fun, and it also took place very quickly: I was called in for testing which I passed with flying colors, and few days later I was sitting at my desk, working as an intern in the BSS team.

What is the role of the Department for Information Systems for Business Support?

The role of our Department and our task is to provide support in the event of any issues and to find a proper way of handling such issues, and most importantly, to tackle such issues before they affect any of our customers. Of course, that is a rather big challenge, but for me personally, it was precisely what has helped be upgrade my knowledge and learn how systems work. It is our job to work as a team, to help each other and to be completely focused on customers. Team spirit in our Department was visible from day one, because my coworkers have helped me reach the position I’m working on today. The support they have provided and the knowledge they have shared with me selflessly have helped me balance between work and studying, and have shaped me into being a valuable member of Vip’s family, completely able of performing my duties independently and confidently.

What made you choose Vip to be the starting point of your career?

Vip is one of the largest companies in our country and it has always managed to stay on top of global trends, and it is also among the few companies setting new trends on our market. The thought of working at such a big company, having more than 1100 coworkers and servicing more than 1.2 million users certainly pumps up your adrenaline levels. I was well informed of the working conditions that the company offered, of the amount of learning which is required from each and every of its employees, and of the possibility of advancement and professional upgrade, so all that was a strong motivation for me to make Vip my starting point in my career.   When I saw the job announcement on LinkedIn, I know that that was my chance of getting a step closer to reaching my goal.

How was the first day at work?

To be honest, I felt a bit overwhelmed on my first day, since after all, this is a big company, with many employees and dynamic atmosphere, so I did the best I could to fit in and remember the names of my coworkers I met that day. I’m sure I must have looked a bit shy then, but luckily, I was assigned to a great team, so I quickly adapted.

After only 14 months, you switched your position of intern with the position of full-time employee. What is the difference between these two positions?

Well, what I did as an intern did not differ much from what I’m doing now as an employee, except maybe at the beginning of my internship. Of course, I had been involved on many projects during that period, but I focused the most on getting as much knowledge as I could so I could advance. I can now say that both positions have responsibilities on their own, because being intern allows you to learn through practice, allowing you to be involved in several projects and to learn information, which oftentimes is confidential. When I was officially hired by Vip, the first thing I felt was a sense of relief, because I finally landed the job I have always dreamt of and I managed to reach the objective I had set for myself more than a year ago.

In Vip you learned about agility at work, digitalization and you were exposed to different learning platforms. What other benefits did the company offer?

It is very important to mention that Vip sets high standards for its operations, starting from the way how information is transferred outside the company, all the way to how the company communicates to its employees via several channels, so the chance of you missing a piece of information is really slim. In addition to all learning and advancing possibilities that the company offers, it also allows its employees to find the perfect balance between their professional and private live. Most importantly, the company allows you to advance in some fields which are beyond your official position, but which always prove helpful in improving your overall performances. Everything is very interesting, from the way how meetings are scheduled, the e-scooters which are available for us to use at work, the interesting games for the employees, all the way to the resourceful online learning platform. Vip, being part of the big A1 family, gives you the opportunity of working and collaborating closely with coworkers from other countries and of learning the latest trends. In the age of digitalization, physical distance is no longer an issue, so we can always work in agile teams and face everyday challenges together.

What’s next?

Well, of course, grabbing a drink or two with my coworkers :)
